At the beginning of the book we are greeted with the start of how the Apollo shuttles began coming out. Long story short, there was an issue in the engine and it sparked causing the room around them to catch fire. The only reason they couldn't really put it out fast enough was because the air in the pod was actually just oxygen. That was how it began. Fast forward a few years and we are about to resend humans to the moon. The main jist of it is that the rocket launches just fine they get into the atmosphere like planned but on their trip to the moon a leak suddenly cracks into the main part of the ship where now the astronauts are forced to move to the front capsule.

They have lost the majority of their fuel and they are moving farther and farther away from home.
